Horsham Tree Surgeons

The tree surgery experts at Horsham Tree Surgeons are an experienced team who operate all around the area, out to Pulborough, Burgess Hill, Ockley and Crawley. They take pride in their profession and have done some great work for me. I’ve recommended Horsham Tree Surgeons to a lot of friends and they have all been pleased with the quality of work and the price.

One of the things I look for when choosing tree care is a regard for safety! To my mind it’s super-important that workers are mindful of the damage they can cause to themselves and to others, as well as buildings and other plants. I’ve seen too many casual guys who simply pick up a chainsaw and start hacking away without minimising the risk of accidents happening. So I’m always on the lookout for companies that have a strict code of ethics and safety.

A wonderful old yew tree in a churchyard

We had a sad old tree removed from our garden a couple of years ago. One thing I hate is to remove trees unnecessarily, but unfortunately this one had become dangerous and there was no way of saving it. It’s actually quite an art to undertake tree removal without causing damage to anything around. First they climbed the tree and took off branches, carefully lowering the larger ones to the ground rather than just throwing them as I’ve often seen happen. They got rid of those branches as they worked, to keep the area tidy and free of hazards. Eventually a very unhappy looking trunk remained and this was removed by a couple of guys who had obviously done it before! Great team work and a pleasure to watch.

In our case we wanted stump removal to leave the area clean and ready for replanting. So the guys used specialist machinery to remove the tree stump entirely, then they back-filled the large hole to leave the lawn intact. Finally a couple of strips of turf were added and rolled down. All we had to do was to keep the area watered so the turfs bedded themselves in and grew to turn the whole area green with new grass.

Once the bigger jobs were done, we needed some tree pruning so all our trees were inspected and pruned to remove any dead wood and to improve the health and shape of the trees. Again an art and we are enjoying the results of their labours!

A great job and we supplied tea and coffee to keep them happy!

Horsham Builders

I’m including in my blog some of the Horsham businesses that we’ve used over the years and have served us well. I may even turn it into something of a directory for the town – ideas are evolving as I write!

So I’m starting with a review for a builder in Horsham who specialises in bigger projects like house building, home extensions, renovations, remodelling and complete refurbishments. They do also take on smaller jobs when time permits, but are experts in project-managing and bringing in experts where needed to get things done in a timely manner.

This construction company is called Horsham Building Contractors, which probably says it all. They are expert builders but also contractors, taking on additional specialists to put together the most complex of projects. So if you want a new house with all the latest energy-efficient devices, they can accommodate your requirements, from gadgets to entire smart homes, using the sun, wind and underground sources of heat to power your house.

A building company lives or dies by its reputation so before we chose HBC to do our work, we checked out their reviews and found them to be very good. We’d like to add our recommendation to their list as they did a great job and left the site clean and tidy, which doesn’t happen with every local builder we’ve used. Sometimes they do a good job but don’t come back for the final tidy, which is more than annoying.

Some builders depart half-way through a project to go and start on another job – in fact that seems very common. Perhaps is so that they can be sure the new job goes ahead because most people won’t swap builder once they’ve started and they’re guaranteed continuous work. But it’s very frustrating for customers because every job takes longer than anticipated. So we were pleased to find that Horsham Building Contractors didn’t abandon us part-way through the job but carried on to the end.

So this is builder we’d recommend for doing a good job, being on time and great work all round.

The Buildings of Horsham

The Causeway, Horsham

There are some wonderful old buildings in the town of Horsham. I love to wander from the town hall along The Causeway, past the museum towards St Mary’s Church. The houses are beautiful and the tree lined lane is peaceful as it only leads to the church. I’ll be investigating the history of these buildings and reporting back for the blog.

Then there’s the Carfax right in the centre of town. I believe this name means the meeting places of roads. Here you’ll find some lovely ancient buildings like the old pub and hotel, mixed with more modern buildings which are now luxury apartments. It’s an attractive area, housing the blue and white bandstand and providing a lovely outdoor area for gatherings like the turning on of the Christmas lights and memorial services.

From the Carfax you can walk along East Street, which now houses many restaurants in the old buildings, many of which used to be shops. In the opposite direction you find West Street and the whole comes together in a unique and interesting West Sussex town.
